Counter Culture : Session 10

Image of God

Genesis 1:24-26  Then God said, “Let the earth produce every sort of animal, each producing offspring of the same kind – livestock, small animals that scurry along the ground, and wild animals.”  And that is what happened.  God made all sorts of wild animals, livestock, and small animals, each able to produce offspring of the same kind.  And God saw that it was good.

Tuesday brought about an interesting discussion in God’s Word. As Platt takes us deeper into study, we take a moment to review this very important characteristic of making. Man was created in the image and likeness of God. Not only was man created in Gods image and likeness, but God also created the world in a specific order, and according to its own kind.

Carefully we examined the creation story, seeing how God was very exact in all He created. “He said let there be…” His words matched what His mind conceived. His imagination produced designs, and His Words produced what He conceived in His thoughts. He works through each grouping, marking sure each was perfectly designed and configured so that creation would be as He envisioned it. Once finished, His eyes beheld His design, and he determined that it was Good. This is key, because it places a stamp on His work. He gives it a thumbs up, letting us know that His work is as He intended for it to be. It was perfect! IMG_0981

We also see in the creation account not just His design of creation, but His design for creation. God not only decided what was created but how creation would recreate creation. He determined that plants would produce seeds, and that the animals would multiply and fill the earth by mating with its own kind. He makes man and then creates a suitable helper for Him. He designs them to work perfectly for each other, considering the other both in design, purpose and deed. It was as He desired, and He Was pleased.

We then found ourselves in the 6th chapter of Genesis, watching God destroy what He had called God. Notice that the design was kept in tact! He preserved he family, and the design by saving each kind male and female. God was displeased because mankind had taken His beauty and abused it. Mankind, bent towards evil inclination, after the fall, found itself using things outside of their design and purpose. Mankind had begun pleasing and serving its flesh, forgetting its purpose and design. Thus God had to reset mankind. Just because you can find a use for or make something work does not mean it is right or pleasing to the Lord.  Someone discovered how to ferment fruit and make wine…plants could be smoked….sex could be had with the same sex…etc  These are all misuses of the original intent. Abuses of Gods design!

We asked ourselves, What has God given you for good, that you have used used for evil.  An answer that opened our eyes was “Our Mouths”.  What have you misused?

We have dominion over the earth, but don’t have the right to pervert Gods design! Though God left man in control, He never intended for man to take what He designed to use it for his pleasure. Creation was designed to sustain man, not entertain man. They were to be productive. Ephesians 2:10 says For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.  We are masterpieces to God!  He created us to do great work, and in Christ, He sought to bring us back to His original design.  We must purpose in our hearts to name, find, and keep God’s intent for His creation, so that we can experience the freedom that we were created with!

This session was very exciting. Not featured in the blog was our dialogue about homosexuality and our need to understand God’s purpose for our lives.
