5 Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. 6 So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.
We have heard over an over about the battle that wages in the life of every person. It’s the battle between good and evil. The fight to either please and serve our flesh or yield to and follow our Spirit. During our discussion, we spent time analyzing the sinful nature of the flesh and how it leads us down the wide path.
In college, I would argue, “If you give the mind long enough, you can rationalize anything!” At some level, the more you give consideration to anything, the more you can make an argument for completing the action. Notice, I said “you can make”, but the truth of the matter is, we are more Jury than Prosecution or Defendant. Both the Spirit and the Adversary are submitting both facts and evidence for us to consider, and from these articles, we decide what to do. We are weighing evidence each day, and making decisions with the help of the laws we know and have been exposed to make decisions.
One of the most important parts of making decisions is listening to the instructions of the judge. The judge is the keeper of the law, giving boundaries, and helping the jury properly carry out the law in each case. While we know this to be true, the devil is able to craft a solid case, much like he did with Adam and Eve. His argument; disobeying God leads not to death but to knowledge and being more like the God, when it actually leads to being more like him.
While our minds might be a court setting, it is important to note that we are not required to hear our the argument of the Prosecution. As the devil attacks, the Prosecution and Judge are always objecting to what is presented, and leaves us responsible for clearing our minds and not considering what was presented as an option for truth! Truly, we must bring every thought captive, that freedom might be obtained.
We must keep our minds focused on Spiritual things. Feeding ourselves the presentation of the Defense. Familiarizing ourselves with each article, and training ourselves to be ones who seek righteousness and not worldly pleasures.
